Textile Tuesday: FABSCRAP

Once each month, we invite a sustainable textile vendor to come present their materials and processes. Join us for July’s Textile Tuesday with Jessica Schreiber, founder of FABSCRAP.

Waste management and fashion are not usually part of the same conversation. However, textiles make up 6% of New York City’s residential waste stream, and are largely unaddressed by commercial waste haulers. What are options do consumers have? What responsibilities to businesses have? What is the current condition of the end-use markets? Jessica Schreiber, who for 5 years managed New York City’s textile programs, will discuss the local and industrial challenges of textile reuse and recycling, and introduce her newly launched organization, FABSCRAP.

FABSCRAP provides convenient pickup and recycling of textiles from businesses in New York City. Working with large fashion brands, independent designers, cutting rooms, textile arts organizations, schools, and regional processors, FABSCRAP aims to build a network of up-cycling and down-cycling partnerships to ensure maximum diversion from landfill. Jessica will explain how FABSCRAP works, the benefits for participating businesses, and the environmental value of textile reuse and recycling.
