On September 14-20, 2015, the Brooklyn Fashion+Design Accelerator presents “FASHION=ACTIVISM: Rethink, Reuse, Respect,” an exhibit featuring work by artists, emerging local brands and big apparel brands that are determined to change how we think about what we wear. Offering a counterpoint to the traditional New York Fashion Week runway shows, the exhibit uses artifacts, garments, performance and media, to explore human rights, the impact of the industry on the environment and the need to support traditional cultures.
FASHION=ACTIVISM is sponsored by Eileen Fisher and The North Face.
Daily tours of the exhibition include interactions with fashion activist and textile artist Liz Collins, creator of Knitting Nation who will be creating her sculpture over the week, a ongoing film festival featuring documentaries and PSAs about the apparel industry and a study center that allows visitors to dig deeper into the challenges faced by the apparel industry.
Exhibits include:
Artworks by: Lucia Cuba, “Articulo 6“; Liz Collins, “Knitting Nation: Phase 14 The Matter at Hand”; Amy DuFault, “The Tailor Project“; Holly McQuillan, “MakeUse“; Sophie Snider and Sarah Krasley, “Haulers.” Local apparel brands include Study NY, Boerum Apparel and Catrinka. Highlighted big brands include “The Handloom Project” by Eileen Fisher and “The Backyard Hoodie” by The North Face. The exhibition also features Fashion Revolution Day and short films.
