Design, Identity, and New Economies in Oaxaca

Carmen Malvar, a BF+DA Research Fellow, presents her work with CADA – a research project utilizing design and craft examining possibilities for greater local living economies through identity, interdependence, and worker collectives, in Oaxaca, Mexico. John Bruce will present a short film illuminating the current context for these practices from his recent fieldwork with CADA in Oaxaca.

The 45 minute presentation which starts at 6:30 pm will be followed by a Q&A.

Carmen Malvar is a Ph.D candidate at the University of Southhampton, and is the Director of CADA project. Carmen has worked with many major global brands as a designer and strategist. Previously, she worked as an architect on many large-scale projects, and was lead architect for Zara (Inditex). Carmen lectures internationally on globalization, design, international expansion strategies, trends, and consumption analysis. She is faculty at Elisava: Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, the University of Technology Monterrey Guadalajara, and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She is also an instructor for the Certificate in Design Entrepreneurship program at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. She lives and works between Oaxaca, New York City, and Barcelona.

John Bruce is an interdisciplinary designer, researcher, strategist, and media maker. He has extensive experience in empathetic ethnography and systems-thinking. He is dedicated to supporting projects for positive economic and social impacts. John is senior strategist for Forward Mapworks, a strategic consultancy. He also co-founded the design and architecture firm Super-Interesting!  He previously served as marketing director for several media and tech ventures, and in development and production for film and television. He is Assistant Professor of Strategic Design + Management at Parsons, and also teaches for the School of Visual Arts program IMPACT: Design for Social Change. He is a Fellow at the Graduate Institute for Design Ethnography and Social Thought, at The New School, and is a member of the board of trustees for The Flaherty Film Seminar.
