Business and Design | Session 1

Understanding the landscape of the business world has never been more critical for the creative professional. This course is an introduction to creating value and deriving revenue for design-based businesses.

Topics Include: Introduction to business models, case studies of business strategies, critical decision making, developing markets, building profits, forecasting trends and understanding how business trends impact the design entrepreneur.


Instructor: Rebeccah Pailes-Friedman

Rebeccah Pailes-Friedman, IDSA, is founder and principal designer of Interwoven Design Group, LLC, author of “Smart Textiles for Designers”, founding director of the Intelligent Materials Applied Research and Innovation (IMARI) Lab at Pratt and has been featured on the show America’s Greatest Makers. Interwoven Design Group is a forward thinking, multi-dimensional design practice that specializes in wearable technology and smart textiles, where she leads a team of designer in both experimental and commercial design commissions and has worked with a wide range of partners from NASA to Nike and Intel.

Her book “Smart Textiles for Designers, Inventing the Future of Fabric” is the first book to look at the exciting and quickly developing area of technology through the eyes of a designer; both a core reference work and inspiration guide for students and professionals alike. Rebeccah’s invention “WithMe” developed with Intel and shown on America’s Greatest Makers is a small disc-like device with an embedded electronic module that clips onto a baby’s clothing to revolutionize the way parents monitor their babies.

Rebeccah graduated magna cum laude from Pratt Institute, holding both a BFA in Fashion and MID in Industrial Design, and has studied graphic design at SVA as well as millinery at FIT. She has also held a dual appointment as an adjunct associate professor in both the Fashion Design and Industrial Design departments at Pratt since 1998, was formerly a faculty member at Parsons School of Design, and has served as Acting Chair of the Fashion Department from 2009-2011. Rebeccah’s design work has been exhibited globally and featured in national and international publications.

To Register:

Students with a domestic address can register online here, beginning April 4th. Please follow the directions below-

Select “Continuing Education” on the right hand side of the page.
Select “Registration & Pay for SCPS Courses”.
Where it says “Course Code Number” enter “XCDE”.
Click “Submit” at the bottom of the page.
You will then see all classes running for the CDE program.
Select the courses you would like to take and press “Submit”.

Alternatively you can register in person starting April 4th at the Office of the Registrar at Pratt’s Brooklyn Campus in Myrtle Hall. For additional information regarding registration, you can contact the Registrar at 718 636 3663.
