This year, to celebrate the Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator’s first year in operation, we want to acknowledge some of the individuals who have been alongside us, have inspired us and are part of the journey forward. To that end we are launching the first annual Pratt Institute/BF+DA Positive Impact Awards.
Ecouterre Managing Editor Jasmin Malik Chua is being awarded the News Reporting on Sustainability–Daily Coverage award. We asked her to talk about the difficulty of reporting daily on the challenges of the fashion industry and sustainability. Is it hard to be unbiased to a degree?
“Writing about clothing is easy. Writing about clothing when you believe that the world would be better served if we just consumed less, on the other hand, is trickier. While I believe that we can shop our way to a better world to a certain extent, simply saying ‘Enough!’ to closet clutter that we don’t need would probably stem many of the grievances we have with the fashion industry. No eco-friendly fabric or recycling program on the planet can save us if we continue to squander earth’s resources unchecked.
The conversation is just beginning, but people also love the status quo. Change is in the air, however, and I’m confident we’ll get there eventually. We have to.”
