Kirrin Finch is a conscientious clothing company, founded by Brooklyn-based couple Laura Moffat and Kelly Sanders Moffat, that meets the growing demand for gender-defying fashion by creating menswear-inspired apparel designed to fit a range of women’s bodies.
Fighting for people’s right to express themselves is something of paramount importance to me. Starting Kirrin Finch is another way I can support people who choose not to follow the conventional norms. Fashion was never something I could relate to, until I discovered that I was not bound to women’s fashion. Once the door to menswear opened, I finally felt comfortable embracing my own style, and joined the growing group of people who recognize that clothing does not need to be tied to gender.
I grew up in Scotland and I came to the US at age 17 on a golf scholarship to UCLA. I quickly realized I was more interested in academics over golf and decided to pursue a career in biology. I received a BS in Psychology from UCLA and a PhD in Neuroscience from NYU. Although I enjoyed my work in the healthcare industry, I felt a strong desire to have my own business. With an increasing frustration at my limited fashion options, I realized there was a huge unmet need in the marketplace for women who prefer the design of menswear. Once Kelly and I started pursuing Kirrin Finch, we came to understand how destructive the fashion industry is on the environment. It is the second most polluting industry, only second to the oil industry. Kirrin Finch had to be a sustainable brand! My hope is that we can continue to redefine what makes a woman sexy, while adhering to sustainable practices that are kind to the earth.
