TECH TUESDAY: Teknikio Teaches Us to Sew An LED Heart On Our Sleeves

As part of our ongoing quest to educate our growing fashion community, we ask a tech-based company to come in monthly and talk shop. From 3D prototyping to virtual draping, tools for tracking and storytelling to bio materials grown in Brooklyn labs, our speakers are engineered to inspire you with all the latest and greatest in tech.

Our August Tech Tuesday is featuring our very own Venture Fellow business Teknikio.

Wearable technology is creating quite the buzz these days. Though it might seem very high-tech some very interesting wearables are actually quite low-tech and do not require any programming or high level engineering. In fact we believe that adding electronics to wearables is easier than most objects as our clothes are already such a natural interface.

We interact with zippers and snaps and buttons on a daily basis, and all of these can be used as inputs for a wearable circuit. In this workshop we will walk you through the “Hello World” of wearables: learning how to sew a basic light circuit!
After a brief presentation about the history of electronic wearables and how current fashion designers are using them in particularly interesting ways, we will dive into a hands-on workshop where you will use custom Teknikio sewable boards to sew a heart (light) on your sleeve*! We will also provide resources (both tutorials and recommended parts) for those looking to venture deeper and try different wearable projects at home.

Bring a t-shirt, scrap fabric or something you’d like to sew on!

$10 material fee+ $10 class fee=tons of fun. RSVP below!
