Reviving Ancient Techniques to Honor Cultural Traditions

Reviving Ancient Techniques to Honor Cultural Traditions

When: April 30th 1:15 to 2:30 pm

Where: United Nations Headquarter Conf. Room 6

Featuring BF+DA Managing Director Richa Agarwal on a panel focusing on the incorporation and preservation of traditional and artisanal techniques in the fashion industry as a means of economic and social development. The event will build on some of the key takeaways from our last event, Increasing Transparency in the Fashion Industry to Promote Inclusive Growth, held in February 2019 at the UN.

The artisan sector is a proven source of job creation and therefore a driver to reduce inequalities and generate economic growth. It serves to preserve their cultural heritage which is indigenous most important intangible capital.

Taking as a starting point the work done by Hecho por Nosotros and B – Corp animaná, the event will explore how local practices and transparency in value chains can empower small producers from rural areas, creating productive networks, towards economic growth. The panel will discuss the main challenges that artisans in Latin America and the rest of the World face in developing their businesses, such as the disconnection with the market.

Academics, industry representatives, and artisan-focused NGOs, from different perspectives, will open up the discussion to co-create solutions to uplift artisan’s traditional knowledge throughout their businesses.

Paticipants of the panel will include: Lilian Liu (UN Global Compact), Pamela Calla (NYU), Sandra Moerch (SAP Next Gen), Richa Agarwal (Pratt Institute), Patrick Duffy (GFX), Lanvy Nguyen (Fashion4Freedom), Jasmine Reynolds (animaná) and María Belén Páppolla (Hecho por Nosotros).
