TEXTILE TUESDAY: Design Responsibility, A New Generation of Eco-Smart Textiles

Once each month, we invite a sustainable textile vendor to come present their materials and processes. Join us for November’s Textile Tuesday with James Mendolia from C.L.A.S.S. Education – a new division of C.L.A.S.S. the Milan based eco platform.

In 2015, James partnered with Giusy Bettoni, Eco Pioneer, and CEO Founder of C.L.A.S.S. to create this new division. James will showcase the latest smart technologies used to create innovations in yarns, textiles and materials. Among some of the materials from the C.L.A.S.S. library are EcoTec® by Marchi & Fildi, New Life™, Re.Verso™, Smart materials for Okinawa, BACX by Centro Seta Silk, and the Miroglio Textile Smart Printing system.

Centered in Milan, C.L.A.S.S. Education workshops are a great opportunity to learn about the latest innovations in eco-smart materials and technologies that provide significant reductions in CO2, water and energy. The Milan workshops offer a wide-variety of learning activities, lectures, seminars, and textile mill visits dedicated to sharing knowledge, and introducing ideas to add brand value. The design-centered approaches inspire participants to challenge the existing design development processes and activate change.

By 2050 we are being told that the population will increase 33%, energy demands will increase 50% and water dependency will increase by 30%. So what will your garment be doing 20 years from today – will it be part of the ongoing environmental crisis or leading the way toward change? It is imperative that fashion designers, merchandisers, production and marketing make a connection between the fashion industry and well-being.

There have been many approaches toward sustainability, however most of the fashion industry, a multi-billion dollar global industry, has continued to be slow at embracing the necessary steps to activate change as an integral part of a new smarter business model. James will present a new generation of eco-smart solutions that inspire fashion design and creativity, as well as offer significant reductions in water, CO2 and energy consumption.
