EXHIBIT: The Antigua Project
Friday, September 25, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
In June 2015, 12 New York City designers traveled to Antigua, Guatemala to collaborate with local artisans and make products. They worked for 2 weeks in a studio in the textile museum, Casa del Tejido Antiguo, with weavers, seamstresses, woodworkers, leather workers, a ceramicist and silversmith.
They called it The Antigua Project.
The Antigua Project is the third collaboration organized by Rebecca Welz featuring Pratt student designers and local artisans working together to fabricate products using sustainable, traditional materials and craft techniques. The previous projects from Welz are The Guyana Project, from Guyana, South America and The Malinalco Project, from Malinalco, Mexico.
On September 25, the designers will exhibit their work at the Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator.
Made up of 12 designers, the group was paired with artisans of their choice. According to The Antigua Project’s site, “the working relationship is a collaboration utilizing the contemporary sensibilities of the New York designers and the ancient traditional expertise of weavers, woodcarvers, carpenters, leatherworkers, a shoemaker, a welder and a silversmith.”
Exhibiting designers include: Juliana Alvarez, Aldana Ferrer Garcia, LiLi Jackson, Samantha Katehis, Joshua Knoblick, Elisia Langdon, Murrill Oakes, Adin Rimland, Lane Samata, Rebecca Welz, I Chao Wang, Michael Wong.
